Corey began playing piano in 2000 at the age of 9 with Gloria Matthies. He later transferred to renowned pianist and teacher Loren Hiebert from Altona, MB. By 2008, Corey was playing at a Grade 10 level.
Corey completed his Bachelor of Music at Brandon University (2010-2014), where he studied with Megumi Masaki. He completed the full Grade 10 Certificate through Royal Conservatory of Music, but suffered a repetitive stress injury while preparing for the A.R.C.T. Diploma.
For the next three years, Corey systematically re-learned how to approach playing the piano in ways that were more natural for his body. He is passionate about sharing these techniques with his students, watching them diligently for signs of stress or tension.
Corey maintained a 4.0 GPA, graduating with the Brandon University Silver Medal for the highest GPA in his program. Now, with over a decade of teaching experience, Corey has earned the title of Registered Music Teacher through the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers' Association.
Corey has significant experience in collaborative music as a pianist and vocalist. He has worked with singers and instrumentalists, and performed many incredible chamber works.
For three summers, Corey travelled to Italy to represent Canada in the International Casalmaggiore Festival, a festival for piano, strings, and voice. He also sang with the prestigious Brandon University Chorale in tours through Estonia and Latvia, the "Singing Baltic Countries" in Europe.
More recently, Corey has learned and recorded over 150 beautiful pieces of music since the start of the corona virus pandemic in March 2020. You can view these videos by clicking here!
From 2013-2017, Corey volunteered with the charitable organization, Artists in Healthcare, MB raising over $32,000 and creating the largest rural branch of their organization. Over the years, 1,000+ live music concerts were performed for residents in care homes in Brandon and Souris, Manitoba; free-of-charge.
"I See The Light (Tangled)"
Here is one of Corey's recent performances, arranged by Jon Michael Ogletree.
This piece was learned and recorded in March 2021 to inspire students to continue to work on their rhythms and challenge themselves each day to improve.
