Education & Qualifications
Corey began playing piano in 1998 at the age of 8. He took lessons with Gloria Matthies near his home town of Lowe Farm, MB and later transferred to renowned pianist and teacher Loren Hiebert from Altona, MB. By 2008, Corey was playing at a Grade 10 level.
Corey attended Brandon University (2010-2014), where he studied with Megumi Masaki. He completed his Grade 10 Practical Examination through Royal Conservatory of Music in his first year and was working towards his A.R.C.T Diploma during his second year when he suffered a repetitive stress injury.
For the next three years, Corey systematically re-learned how to approach playing the piano in ways that were more natural for his body. He is passionate about sharing these techniques with his students and colleagues, and watches his students diligently for signs of stress or tension while playing piano.
During university, Corey tutored students in theory and aural skills (ear training), and was involved in “Masaki’s Rising Stars” tours, where he and colleagues would travel all over Manitoba to provide free lessons to local students and perform. Corey maintained a 4.0 GPA, graduating with the Brandon University Silver Medal for the highest GPA in his program.
Corey is now a Registered Music Teacher (R.M.T.) through the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers’ Association (MRMTA), an organization committed to ensuring the highest caliber of music education possible and promoting high standards of music in each community.
From 2013-2018, Corey volunteered with the charitable organization, Artists in Healthcare, MB raising over $32,000 and creating the largest rural branch of their organization. Over the years, 1,000+ live music concerts were performed for residents in care homes in Brandon and Souris, Manitoba; free-of-charge.
Corey sings and plays in care homes as a form of community outreach and has learned hundreds of pieces spanning the 1900-1960s. You can book Corey for weddings, funerals, events and local care homes by clicking here!
